What is Among Doubts?
Among Doubts is a fast, social, word-based party game inspired by impostor and social deduction games.
Most players see the same secret category and secret word, while the impostor does not know the word and must blend in by improvising.
How do you play (quick start)?
- Start a game.
- Enter player names.
- Select the number of impostors.
- Choose optional settings such as:
- always visible images,
- children mode,
- whether the impostor receives a hint.
- Pick one or more categories.
- Pass the device around so each player can secretly view their role.
- Begin the round: players take turns giving an association or short description without saying the word directly.
- After one or more rounds, players may decide to continue or try to eliminate the impostor.
- The impostor may stop the game at any moment and attempt to guess the word.
What are the roles?
There are two main roles:
- Players see the secret word and try to recognize who does not know it.
- Impostors do not see the secret word. Their goal is to blend in, listen carefully, and figure out the word before being eliminated.
Players should give useful clues without making the answer too obvious.
What should players say during the round?
Give short, safe clues. You can describe things like:
- properties,
- usage,
- context,
- size,
- location,
- general associations.
Do not say the word directly, obvious synonyms, exact translations, or spell it out.
A good clue helps other players confirm they know the same word while keeping it difficult for the impostor.
Example round flow
- Pick a starting player.
- Continue clockwise.
- Each player says one association or short description.
- After everyone has spoken, the group decides whether to:
- continue for another round, or
- eliminate a suspected impostor.
When do you vote?
Vote when your group feels there is enough information.
In most games, voting happens after two cycles, but you can vote earlier if the group is already confident or feels stuck.
What is the scoring system?
Among Doubts uses the following scoring rules:
- If the group finds all impostors, the remaining players win and each receives 100 points.
- If the number of impostors becomes equal to the number of remaining players, the impostors win and receive 200 points.
- If an impostor correctly guesses the secret word, that impostor receives 300 points.
- If a normal player mistakenly tries to guess the word, that player loses 200 points.
- If an impostor tries to guess the word but fails, they receive 0 points and are eliminated.
How many impostors should we use?
Recommended setup:
- 3–5 players: 1 impostor
- 6–8 players: 1–2 impostors
- 9–12 players: 2 impostors
More impostors make the game faster and more chaotic. Fewer impostors make deduction more strategic.
How do categories and hints work?
Each round selects a category such as Animals, Food, or Places, and then picks a secret word from that category.
- Regular players see both the category and the word.
- Impostors usually see only the category.
- Depending on your settings, the impostor may also receive a small hint.
Kids mode: what changes?
Kids mode filters the game to more child-friendly categories and words.
It avoids mature topics and reduces ambiguity, making the game better suited for families, younger players, and school settings.
Tips for players (so you do not accidentally help the impostor)
Try not to make the answer too obvious too early.
- Avoid brand names.
- Avoid exact locations.
- Avoid famous examples that reveal the word immediately.
- Start with more general clues such as size, material, typical use, or color.
Tips for impostors (how to survive)
If you are the impostor:
- stay vague but consistent,
- match the level of detail used by others,
- listen carefully to repeated themes,
- when unsure, use broad descriptions that could fit many words in the category.
Can we play on one phone?
Yes.
The game works well in a one-device pass-around mode. Each player can secretly reveal their role, then pass the phone to the next person. Once all roles are revealed, place the device on the table and continue playing together.
Does it work offline (PWA)?
If you install Among Doubts as a PWA, many assets can be cached for offline use.
The first launch usually requires an internet connection so the application can download and cache the required files. After that, offline support depends on your device, browser, and whether the needed content has already been cached.
Is Among Doubts available in multiple languages?
Yes.
You can switch languages in the app. Categories and words are localized so the game feels more natural for players using different languages.
